Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod

ABOUT THE SUNSHINE COAST
JUNIOR EISTEDDFOD

The current Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod has been held every year since 1967.

The Eisteddfod is a great place for young performers to showcase their talents and the results of much hard work. Our professional Adjudicators will provide you with written constructive comments and a certificate with trophy or medal for awarded places. The student will have the opportunity to perform for a supportive audience. The Eisteddfod is held over 21 days in July and August each year and is open to competitors up to the age of 18 years. Over 6000 students compete in more than 150 different items ranging from solos, duets, trios/quartets, small ensembles and large ensembles. All are welcome to attend and enjoy the performances. Details are on our admission page. A dedicated committee of volunteers manage this community event and are always looking for extra assistance.

The Nambour Junior Eisteddfod was revived in 1967, previous to this an Eisteddfod had been held in the 1930's and 1940's.

The main aim was to showcase the talents of the young people, to give them experience before an audience and to build self-confidence. The music section consisting of piano, organ, and all was held in the Masonic Hall, Blackall Terrace, Nambour with just one adjudicator. School choirs performed in the old civic hall in Currie Street.

Dancing was also part of the Eisteddfod for a short time. Speech and drama was originally held at the same time as music until owing the difficulties this posed contestants, it was held the week before the music section.

The venue for speech and drama was the N.A.T.S. Hall, Blackall Terrace, and later moving to the Presbyterian Church Hall, and then to Lind Lane Theatre. The large number of events included set pieces, characterisation and public speaking.

In the early  1990's Music was divided into different sections of piano, brass and woodwinds, strings and vocals with a specialised adjudicator for each.

Two people who gave much time and effort in the early days were Lurlene Fereday and Flora Stephens. They were two of the many volunteers who’ve enabled the continuance of the present Sunshine Coast Junior Eisteddfod for more than 50 years.
